"Why I Loved Good Night Good Morning" - Directed by Sudhish Kamath

This post initially appeared at Bollyspice.com, but when the portal went thru changes, the link broke. While the admins work on fixing it up, I have (on demands from a few :) re-posted it here.

Thankfully for us, the past few years have seen “Indie” films (popularly nicknamed in India as parallel cinema, i.e. do not boast of the typical masala bolly-fare) going mainstream. While Indian audiences are still miles away from giving our independent filmmakers the same adulation as our commercial ‘big-production-house’ backed directors, it is heartening to see that what was earlier restrictive to select art audiences and festivals screenings is getting a healthier reception among regular cinegoers.

Making rounds of several national plus International film festivals, Sudhish Kamath’s (co-written with Shilpa Rathnam) Good Night | Good Morning is an independent film about an all-night phone call between two strangers. Sudhish, an expert movie critic; fabulous host on a chat show (Hands up), goes behind the camera for the second time, with this 80 odd-minutes film.

Wedding Bells: PrithviRaj ties the knot with Supriya Menon.

Its OFFICIAL! Malyalam Superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran is hitched and the lucky lady is BBC journalist Surpiya Menon. While speculations began around a month back about the supposed nuptials, fans were taken aback when the news broke early morning on 25th April, that the couple had already tied the knot. The wedding was held in Thenkurissi Kandaath Heritage Villa in Palakkad which happens to be the bride’s hometown. It was a low-key private affair attended by less than 50 of the couple’s close family members and friends.

The couple met some (?!) years ago, when Supriya was researching South Indian Cinema. A grand reception has been planned at Le Meridien on May 1st for friends and acquaintances from the fraternity.

They make a super cute couple, dontcha think?? Best Wishes to the couple.

Bournvita Quiz Contest - We WANT it back! ! Join in...

One of my fondest childhood memories can be traced back to watching 'Bournvita Quiz Contest' with my siblings. (BQC and Chitrahaar were the only two small-screen luxuries we were allowed when we were young :)) Long before Big Bachchan took to the hot seat armed with trivia's and questions, quizmaster Derek O'Brien enthralled his little audiences with GQ edu-tainment. It was a neat ploy then used by parents to get their kids to solving quizzes, engaging in reading and also extra motivation to study hard, so that we could beat each other at the mock quizzes.

With the increasing advent of 'money-over-matter' reality shows capturing the small-screen, it’s almost impossible to find anything of remote sensibility to be watched on television. This has been the increasing concern for  many who have come together and started a movement to 'Bring the BQC Back'.

What started out as something simple has now become a full on quizzing hub. People are sharing their Q&A's. Some have also come up with cool one liners - like 'Don't be Stupid, Bring BQC Back' and 'Bring Sexy Back, Bring BQC Back' which have got converted into badges and banners et al. They’ve also got Derek and Mr. Amin Sayani (the original quizster) to spread the word.

Right now, they’re working on the steps forward, but you can show your support by joining the movement. And If you have any suggestions, feedbacks, ideas for the team, shout it out.

Movie Review: TeenMaar (Telugu) *Pawan Kalyan, Trisha, Kriti Kharbanda

Apart from my usual language disclaimer, may I add a second note here, that I have as much as possible refrained from comparing TeenMaar to its original Love Aaj Kal. However is some references are delved upon, request the reader to accept it without being judgmental.

When I first heard about ‘Love Aaj Kal’ remake in Telugu, I was clearly intrigued. Though the original was a box-office hit, it received some flak because not many people warmed up to the concept of ‘practical romance’ wherein breaking up, patching, moving on etc was as casual as any other hobby. Also with 2 narratives of different timelines running parallel, intertwined with each other, was a tough job to keep the viewer constantly attentive and engaged. So my first thought was - is the comparatively reserved South-Indian audience ready for this kind of cinema. Will Director Jayanth and Trivikram be able to do a satisfactory job at getting the local audience to accept this modern day ‘practical’ love-story? I think they do. And they do a good job at it.

Movie Review - "Dum Maaro Dum" - 'Goa'ing HIGH ! !

An A-lister, A southern hottie (whom women are lusting after), a critically acclaimed supporting actor (who's become camera's darling), Hot-Bod in mini skirts, item song, sex, scandal and sea. All the ingredients perfectly picked to make a successful commercial MASALA flick. Can't possibly go wrong or CAN IT?

Dum Maaro Dum traces the lives of its three male leads, from three different strata, against the edgier side of the tourist hub otherwise portrayed famously for sunbathing and cocktail-sipping. DJ Joki (Rana Daggubati) hanging to the pasts of a failed relationship with girlfriend Zoe (Bipasha Basu), who bait the drug laden trap for greed of dollars and a high flying career. Joki doesn’t want history repeated and is determined to prove the innocence of Lori (Prateik) the scapegoat, caught in the rough of a failed drug-trade. Bad-cop turned-good ACP Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek) is on a mission to clean up ‘Drugs Ka Disneyland’ Goa. On suspicion is businessman-cum-philanthropist Lorsa Bisquita aka “Biscuit” (Aditya Pancholi) who is known to have Goa-vaasi’s in his pocket. Not enough as there’s a Godfather of drug traders (Micheal Barbossa) lurking in the shadows. The mystery – Who is Micheal Barbossa? The goal - Pin the drug-king!

Thinking PINK with Elle Breast Cancer Carnival

With a string of events that began in March in Delhi, moved onto Bangalore, and final leg in Mumbai on Sunday, 10th April, Elle's Breast Cancer carnival came to a glorious finale close for the year. I have been lucky to have had my brush with the cause really early (i was 18!) when I interned with Devika Bhojwani (the lady behind the cause). This served as a homecoming of sorts for me !

Having seen loved ones go thru physical-emotional distress, its unnerving that we still maintain a nonchalant attitude. After all it barely takes 15 mins to get a quick-start on detection, treatment.. So WISEN UP! & spread the word! Thankfully, the lovely ladies at Elle hope to preach just that! Held annually, with an objective to raise funds for the Tata Memorial Hospital (contribute!), the carnival aims to educate, bond, spread awareness about detection, treatments of breast cancer.

Gitanjali Lifestyle Chennai International Fashion Week Season 3

"Fashion weeks are like our film awards, there are too many of them," said designer Tarun Tahiliani in his interview

Not everyone at Gitanjali Lifestyle and fashionistas seem to agree, as fashion celebrations continue.. after enticing fashion scenes in Mumbai first & Delhi in the week gone-by, it moves on to the city of Chennai. In its third year, the Chennai International Fashion Week Season 3 is gearing up for a 3-day spectacle commencing with an event on 14th April and concluding on Saturday, the 16th April 2011.

At a glittering ceremony held at Hotel Ambassador Pallava, Chennai over the weekend, the names of participating designers and sponsors associated with the event were announced.

Gitanjali Lifestyle CIFW3 will showcase creations of 13 designers, 4 titled shows with more than 50 models walking the ramp. In addition, a special Galatta anniversary show scheduled for 14th April promises to feature several young and successful stars of Kollywood.

IPL Season 4: Who is your favourite of them all?

With Dhoni & Co. having lifted the precious World Cup, almost everyone across the country is suffering from cricket hangover's or withdrawal symptoms. It only helps that IPL (Indian Premier League) madness begins in less than 24 hrs and franchises, players, sponsors seem to be in a mad rush transiting between venues organizing launches, parties, the works! !

Meanwhile, ensuring the current festive mood of the country isn't compromised upon, Wizcraft-organized opening ceremony on 8th April in Chennai is expected to have a spectacular dazzling dose of entertainment courtesy performances by SRK (his team KKR plays the 1st match there), Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala and Akriti Kakar among some others.

Though after the splendid unified performance of Team India at WC, I'm a little perturbed to see the boys pitted against each other. the opening matches over this weekend will see Chennai (Dhoni) take on KKR (Gambhir), Pune (Yuvraj) v/s Punjab (Piyush Chawla) & Mumbai (SRT) v/s Delhi (Sehwag).
So in all fairness I'm not supporting any particular team & will cheer for everyone in general :) as a wise man said, may the best team win!

Who are you supporting this IPL season?

Cricket World Cup 2011 is ours! Bowled, Caught , and Locked!

As I sit down to write this, it’s close to almost 48 hours since Dhoni & Co. laid their hands on the gleaming trophy of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. 28 long years, it took for the trophy to makes its return back to INDIA, since our last win in 1983 (leaded by Kapil Dev). My parents tried hard to paint a picture of that moment, but it was seven seas across at Lords, England then. So even they could not have been encompassed by the hodgepodge of emotions that was felt by billions on the night of 2nd April 2011.

02nd April 2011. 2:00 pm IST. INDIA started the day with high optimism. They were everyone's clear favorites. Consistent. Fearless. Vigilant. Playing on home ground, they could count on 30k+ people cheering, motivating them to play on. It's a huge booster all that cheering, 'Jai Ho', ‘Chak De’ chants, it injects intensity in the player, keeps the momentum from dipping.

"The day before the final we knew were going to win. We actually even spoke into it. That we were going to win this thing. There was never any doubt" - Coach Gary Kirsten

Read who's hiring! Some cool jobs from writing to gaming to styling!

Happy Tuesday darling readers! The universe finally seems to be making peace with me after the crazy strokes of unfortunate luck I've been having! All's well that ends well & I've had the BEST last few days, *touch wood* being at the right time, at the right place, meeting the right people! ! (fingers crossed the good run continues!).
My experience at FICCI was immense fun, & I feel a tad bit knowledgeable too :) Plus I've still to get rid of the silly smile that's been plastered over my face courtesy SRK ..!

Anyways, as some of you who know me well would know, my professional life's been a mad roller-coaster & genuine search attempts haven't done any good yet! (yes! I can almost sense some snickering). With my details plastered all over the www, I get these news feeds, or genuine well-wishers forwarding me job-spots hoping that kama-dev showers his blessings & I do end up being employed after all. Some are real good, some are bleh, some I don't even want to mention.

While I earnestly apply & wait for the suitable ones to work out, there are many which just end up in my trash. Instead, I thought I'd share some of these real cool oppurtunities with you guys, & you never know, it might actually work for you or someone else you know. (psst: If you do come across some, feel free to pass it on, so I share it! let's do someone some good :)

IDPA Awards for Excellence 2010 Call for Entries! (documentary/short-films)

This the season to win an award or two! Since almost every big publishing house or production house is hosting their own award, we seems to have more award shows than hit films that one can boast of. But without getting too cynical lets just believe its a compliment for the hard work of the winners! (moreso the deserving ones).

But in all the glitz-glamour of filmi business, smaller meaningful work of documentaries get brushed aside. Thats where the IDPA Awards for excellence takes centre-stage applauding interest of documentary and independent, short film makers. So if you have had a documentary cut last year and truly believe your work deserves its recognition, submit them at IDPA. details here

About IDPA: Indian Documentary Producers’ Association(IDPA) is a non-profit organisation that came into being in 1956. It is registered as a public trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950. Today IDPA is India’s single largest association of producers of documentaries, animation films, advertisement films and TV programmes.

Adverts delight - Vodafone 3G 'Super ZooZoo to the brands rescue'!

Many would agree with me that Vodafone's ZOOZOO's are one of the best things to happen to Indian Advertising. They clicked instantly, had great recall + repeat values, and cut thru to appeal to various age-groups (something that very few campaigns manage).

Though I did agree with L.S.Bhat that there was a time when the character (ZooZoo) was getting larger than the brand (Vodafone) , but all in all, it was any brand's or agency's dream campaign!

Then came a phase in between when the ads were getting lesser creative, they were losing sheen, some spots were better than others, the attraction wasn't as strong as it was when they started. But with the launch of the new 3G service by Vodafone, they have unveiled a new commercial which correctly highlights the USP of the service - faster, smarter, better! The mascot is the same, the avataar is different. The execution is good, the vibe is positive, the message is clear, simple without being preachy. For me, its a great campaign and half the battle won!

(Now its left to see how good the service actually is! those trying it out, do share your feedback)

Thoughts?

Happy Holi! !

Wish you guys a very HAPPY & SAFE HOLI! For those interested to know, I didn't play this year (haven't since leaving school 10 yrs back :)  I just grew out of it! Prefer stepping out a mini-vacation. Sadly between all the work, couldn't do that either. But for those who did, hope you guys had a blast.

And absolutely no holi is complete without Anu Malik's tribute to the celebration. So 'Do Me a Favour, Lets' Play HOLI'

Have fun, play safe!

Tweet-O-Tales - Crazy stories from 'Twitter'land!!

When I wrote about having 'a helluva experience' at Terence-Guiness event, I was certainly not talking about a minor fall, missed event & car troubles. Life seems to have taken my 'it can't get worse than this' attitude as a challenge cause I probably had THE WORST Saturday, so much so that I am very much tempted to believe in urban myths of inauspicious full-moon nights and resorting to grandma's preventive measures of nimboo-mirch and kaala tikka.

Anyways moving ahead to the actual reason for this post, I had the heartiest laugh when I logged into Twitter yesterday! It's no secret that Twitter is the hot-spot for celeb-interacting/bashing & I know many who have created accounts only because their fav stars have one..  Now some fans can be really naive and between usual 'Hi/Hello/Reply plss' requests, one gentleman tweeted this to Actor Madhavan,
and Madhavan being the sweet guy he is (We at Bollyspice LOVE him), actually complied to the weird request! :) (for the clueless, retweet = forward (in mobile lang))

It didn't quite end there. Turned out another user was sending similar tweets & Actor Siddharth had a different take to it.

Siddharth's tweet was met with a cheeky reply from Allu Sirish

The fun part is, this isnt a one-of case. You will find hordes of such random requests, smart advices, rude suggestions and some s(t)weet nothings of young lads & ladies proclaiming their undying love (sometimes even marriage) to celebs who sportingly take it as a compliment or just brush them aside.

As long as it's all in good humour, a little laugh could do everyone good, noone's complaining ! On that note, maybe 'laughter therapy' could add to my reasons to join twitter!

YRF's new banner 'Y FILMS' unveils its animation video!

Originally posted at Bollyspice

Just recently we told you about Yash Raj Films special initiative to cater to its younger audiences with the launch of "Y-Films" supported by an adage that goes, "A New Studio with Films of the Youth, by the Youth, for the Youth". The posters released at the launch were a simple logo embodying revolution.

Now we bring to you the extremely cool animated film unveiled earlier today to kickoff the banner's new logo and brand Y FILMS.

Designed and conceptualized by Nupur Bhargava of Invisible Rabbit, the 30-sec promo shows the journey of the conventional urban youth as he races past life juggling education, society and passion.

Dance your way into Guiness Records with Terrence Lewis!

At the recently held Indian Film Festival 2011 in Melbourne, Munni aka Malaika Arora Khan made over 1200 people dance to her tune for around 3 minutes, thus bestowing the famed 'Munni Badnaam' with yet another honour of The Guiness World of Records. What began as a random jiggy-wiggy by a handful spectators during the movie screening as part of the opening night of the festival, caught the fancy of the Guiness reps and led to 1200 people dancing to choreographed beats of Shiamak's trainers.

Taking it a step forward, Mumbai-based choreographer Terence Lewis (aka ex-judge Dance India Dance) has accepted the challenge to perform a similar feat in Mumbai this weekend. Everyone is allowed to be part of this BIGGEST Bollywood dance class by joining in on Saturday, 19th March 2011. And though you dont have to be a Munni or a Sheila to be part of it, you definitely need to be able to swing those hips, as the participants would be expected to complete the 1-hr training to avoid being disqualified.

I can't guarantee any glitterati making their presence at this one, but you can surely expect ONE helluva experience! And if you're a little shy or have two left feet, feel free to join in & cheer out loud for the participants!
