Disclaimer: Like always not a work of fiction, but dedicated to the men in my life (well, atleast a few of them). You make me stronger, & without you my life is incomplete.
ok, so while the hooplah continued, every article, tweet & other random medium of communications used these days ranted about "Women's Day", how it is important, & enlivening to have another "day" added to our calender of celebrations (the real purpose of the day actually drowning in commercialization). The ones that were doubly enthusiastic were spa owners, malls who seized this to bait the victims. Sadly, here the victims were men, who had no choice but to go along with the hysteria, or be tagged as "discriminating" or "callous".
What made it even more bizarre was that at one point every female specie was gung-ho "why 1 day, all 365 days are ours"! yet no stone was left unturned to savor the days fete!
Its not fun anymore being a guy & here's why -
Flashback to 20th century- day in a MAN's life : work - home- eve news - bed.
whoosh into 21st century - added competition at work (owing to almost every second field wanting to hire the fairer sex: media, tourism, hospitality, banks, real estate etc etc), be equally knowledgeable about every commodity in the market whilst learning a new acronym every day - psp, BB, ipad, know where everything is placed in the house; make sure it goes there after use, sit through endless hrs of dress trials, know the children's schedules (it might be turn to babysit if wifey is working late), be capable to tell the difference between mauve and lavender, gucci & prada, silk to chiffon!?!?!
Meanwhile there is the added pressure to act like 40 (women adore the mature men) but look 20, & at the end pray all the above doesn't get you admitted with BP or heart ailment. In between all this be geared to watch the kids on days in the month that constitute girls night out, get together, binging nights, kitty party, get togethers, hen party (yes! these are multiple events). Yet not display any emotion that treads the fine line of irritation to frustration to insanity.
for the still single guy - it gets worse - be careful of what to say as to not sound desperate, be careful on that stare or be perceived as lecherous, be flirtatious but not too much, to ask out or not, to approach or give space? be chivalrous but would that hurt the feminist? to pay the bill or not? who the hell decided these limits & when & why & how?@?
Thus while we still have women screech "Mein bechari, abala nari" when cornered, think again.. maybe we should also have something like a 'Men's liberating day', for men to admit that the world is equally crushing on them. So that they can cry & whine, yet not have anyone mockingly exclaim, "Dude, stop being Gaayyy"
All we need is a common platform..We are just different, equal but different. The mind boggles. Maybe I’m being naive and it really isn’t that simple, but then I’m still waiting for the dust to settle. Its not about the sexes, but the mind and the attitude. Peace to all..
