Hugo (2011) - DVD review

***This post is a review of the regular standard definition edition of Hugo***

Winner of 5 Oscars (of 11 nominations), HUGO directed by Martin Scorsese, released in 2011 is finally available for home viewing launched by Reliance Home Video and Games. The Blu-ray 3D is priced at Rs 1499, Blu-ray for Rs 1299 and DVD for Rs 599.

Although the film very notable for its 3D, the viewing of the film does not necessarily hinge on it. While the 3D visuals are stunning, the regular DVD picture quality is just as impressive. As I plugged in the DVD, the opening scene of the camera moving thru the Parisian train station left me stunned just as much as when I viewed it in 3D. Yes there are noticeable grinds, but in comparison to other films, where 3D is used as a sole intent to show off, in case of the HUGO DVD , the shots seem to integrate smoothly not lessening the visual impact, completely justifying its Oscar wins in the technical categories.

The sound is another revelation altogether. Its a regular Dolby Digital  5.1 but is surprisingly more strong, defined and enhanced. Tic-Toc of clocks, puffing of the steam engines, Hugo brings to life old world French charm of the bygone era.

You know you've had a fantastic movie experience, when once the ending credits roll, the movie compels you to think about it over and over and over again. And then when you put those pieces of thoughts together, it leaves a faint smile on your face, a childlike awe and wonderment. Hugo is *that* FANTASTIC. It might not be the most engaging story-telling, but its a poetry of a movie. It's a love -letter from a man to his ultimate love -movies. And who better than Martin Scorsese to make a enriching visual ode to the world he knows best - movies. After multiple viewings of random clips, i'm still marveling at how the film blends together in palette of hues. Stunning to look at, this one is for a keeps. Its a great add to the film library. It's a classic.

Simply put HUGO is what some of the world's best critics are calling "the stuff that dreams are made of"
